WORKING PARENTS CRAM 3.5 MONTHS OF QUALITY TIME INTO THE TYPICAL FAMILY HOLIDAY 

Working parents spend more quality time with their children in a typical fortnight family holiday away, than they do in three and a half months back home, according to a study out this week. 

The findings from the UK’s biggest supplier of self-catering properties - cottages4you - was conducted to explore the emotional impact a holiday has on the family dynamic in terms of quality time spent and the happy memories shared.   

Working parents spend only 81 minutes* a day with their child when at home, compared to just over 10 waking hours per day when on holiday.     

With UK workers entitled to a minimum of 28 paid work and public holidays a year**, those precious days away from the office allow the typical working parent to recoup just under seven months of quality time with their children.  

Parents from Newcastle cram in the most treasured time with their children on holiday with 51 per cent spending up to 12 hours a day with their loved ones. The following top 10 highlights how parents in other major UK cities fare:

When it comes to the type of quality time spent, 29 per cent of parents said that the biggest advantage of getting away from it all was the chance to visit historical UK landmarks and attractions with their children to help them learn more about British culture. This was followed by 20 per cent of parents who said a holiday afforded them the chance to bond with their children and get to know them better.  

In a boost to the health of the nation, 14 per cent of parents claimed they participate in sports and activities with their children on holiday.

A fifth of parents said that simply spending quality time with their loved ones is the childhood holiday memory that they feel will stand the best test of time for future generations. This was followed by building sandcastles and playing games on the beach (18 per cent), with enjoying Britain’s seaside views and smells in third (14 per cent). 84 per cent of parents said that memories shared with their child on holiday are the most vivid of all.

However, the family holiday is much more than just catching-up on some much-needed quality time as it also enables parents to share memories and experiences and form a unique bond with their child that they would be unable to do back home.”

With acres of national parks and forests, miles of coastline and umpteen castles to explore – not to mention our fantastic theme parks and interactive museums – England is one big playground. Whatever the budget, there’s always something fun and unforgettable to do.”
